Maybe try right up corner -> click on your nick -> click account -> left side profile settings -> try to change nickname

You have to register and then wait to be approved and added to the whitelist. It can take few hours or few days.

In that time we've added over 20,500 players to the whitelist, been the subject of a TED Talk, and included in another, we've been in Time Magazine, spoke at Games for Change, we're in the official The World of Minecraft book by Mojang, and so much more.
